Saint-Etienne - Metz preview

The newly-promoted Metz had a solid start to
their Ligue 1 season, winning four of their opening
seven league fixtures. However, Metz looked awful
over the past few weeks, losing their last four games
in Ligue 1. Last weekend Metz lost 1-0 on the
road against Rennes, conceding a goal in the
second half. Sandwiched in-between their recent
defeats in Ligue 1, Metz picked up a penalty-shootout
win over Paris FC in Coupe de la Ligue. Despite the
recent struggle in Ligue 1, Metz still sit in a comfortable
13th place in the standings tied on 13 points with
fellow newcomers Dijon. Keeping the ball out of
the net has been Metz’s biggest problem throughout
this Ligue 1 campaign, as they hold the second joint
worst defensive record in the division with 21 goals
conceded in eleven rounds. Their recent home form
has also been a problem, as Metz have lost the last
three home fixtures in Ligue 1 and conceded 14 goals
in the process. Furthermore, Metz are winless in their
last five home meetings with Saint-Etienne in all
competitions, losing three and drawing two in this
term. A player to watch here is Mevlut Erdinc, as the
29-year-old striker is leading the club’s goalscoring
charts with 6 goals in his 11 league appearances.

SAINT-ETIENNE PREVIEW

On the contrary, Saint-Etienne have been in fine form
recently as they are currently on a five-game
unbeaten streak in all competitions. They have
only lost two of their eleven league fixtures so far
this season, but it must be noticed that they registered
five draws in the process. Last weekend, Saint-Etienne
managed a 1-1 home draw against Monaco, with both
goals being scored in the first half. Furthermore, Les
Verts fought back from one-goal down to secure a 1-2
away win at Gabala in their Europa League midweek
fixture thanks to goals from Robert Beric and Oussama Tannane.

St. Etienne sit on top of the group C table tied on 8 points
with the 2nd-placed Anderlecht. St. Etienne’s away form
throughout their 2016/2017 competitive season has been
a complete mixed bag with two defeats, three draws and
three wins in their eight away fixtures in all competitions.
Furthermore, Saint-Etienne are currently on a two-game
winning streak on the road, scoring two goals in each of these.
In addition, Les Verts registered victories in each of their last
three visits to the Stade Saint-Symphorien, conceding
just two goals in the process.
